Language and Culture

Given the fact that Ecuador is a multicultural country, a certain number of Ecuadorian students, who are learning English, may descend from indigenous cultures where Spanish is their second language and English their third; therefore, I was committed to learning about how culture may affect their learning of English.

The main objective was to foster cultural identity, and show respect for cultural diversity, creating learning environments based on research and accepted theories of culture and language. All children learn differently and each child needs to feel accepted for who they are as individuals. Therefore, teachers have to be committed to adapting their training to serve the children's needs and different speeds of learning. Attitudes and expectations need to change.

This course encouraged me to reflect on the importance of education for all our children. At the end of the course, I wrote an essay where I designed a workshop to promote inclusion and suggest how to handle diversity in our classes, especially including those requiring extra support due to learning or physical disability, social disadvantage, cultural difference or other barriers to learning. All the essays in this master’s program are requested APA manual.
