Virtual Learning Environments

The e-Learning is defined as “an interactive training system to develop teaching programs, which makes massive use of electronic media to reach a remote student body.”

• E-Learning: Knowledge is delivered exclusively through the Internet.

• B-Learning: Distance learning is combined with face-to-face learning.

• Online training, virtual education, teletraining...

“In E-learning the training process takes place totally or in part through a kind of classroom or virtual environment in which the teacher-student interaction takes place as well as the activities of the students with the learning materials” (Moreira and Adell, 2009).

INDEPENDENT vs. AUTONOMOUS

Independent means to do for yourself, to not rely on others for personal sustenance and support.

Autonomy means to act freely, with a sense of volition and choice.

It’s possible for a person to be independent and autonomous (to freely not rely on others), or to be independent and controlled (to feel forced not to rely on others).

“It is suggested that ‘we learn better when we are in charge of our own learning because of cognitive, social and affective aspects involved in the learning process” (Ciekanski 2007:112); Ellis and Sinclair (1989:2) advocate: 1. Students who take control of their own learning are ready to learn and learning is more effective. 2. Students who are responsible for their own learning can carry on learning outside the classroom. 3. Learning strategies can be transferred to other subjects.
